535 Main Street
Date: 2011
Location: Poughkeepsie, New York, USA
Project Type: Public installation with video projection, community-based workshop (led by PAUSE)
Site: Vacant Lot
Curated by: Matthew Slaats
In Partnership with: PAUSE, Clinton Elementary School
Description: PAUSE, a socially engaged art organization, activated this neglected, urban lot with a series of public art events. The video installation uses the presence of the brick wall to explore our perception of vacancy. Local elementary students made drawings of the brick wall in rusty reds and electrifying graffiti. Their drawings celebrate their ability to impact the neighborhood. The focus is on the positive and negative space of the drawings and the wall, confounding a predictable surface.
