Description: During the Spring Artist Residency with FSA, Brummund created a new process-based artwork for the the city wide event called Spirited Brunch. The final artwork was a site-specific video projection on the interior and exterior of a Gothic style cathedral. The process began with a “community build,” when participants created and balanced black, cube-like sculptures. These materials and conversations are the foundation of the video. The hands, as they steady, hold, or drop a tower of cubes, are the focus of the studio process. The video edits their movement until the purpose of the grip is abstracted and the presence reads as light. The editing includes projecting the moving image onto a stack of paper cubes that were made during the community build. In this case, the cubes that each hand holds concurrently shape the hand. The final video shows at least three hands at once and the combination is always changing. The video is projected onto the architecture of Grace Church Cathedral, creating surprising connections with the structure and place.
