Tracing Thin Air

Date: 2022

Location: Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA

Project Type: A collaborative public art project and an exhibition at The Dinah Washington Cultural Center

Grant: Verdant Fund Project Grant (Andy Warhol Foundation)

Description: How often do you think about air? It’s what we breathe, move through, form community within, and a space of invisible environmental concern. After gathering data on local air quality, Karen Brummund, Allison Grant, and Holland Hopson created a public art event in the middle of their community. “Tracing Thin Air” activated new ways of thinking about our shared space and the air in-between. In addition to individual video or sound installations, we also created a mural on the ground using ultraviolet paint. The mural was invisible under normal lighting conditions. Visitors to the installation revealed the work using UV flashlights. In addition to the public art event, the artworks were exhibited at the Dinah Washington Art Center gallery.
